Captain Horve with E3 crew members Doug Sprague and Adam Ruderman

Bill Horve served almost twenty four years on the Decatur Fire Department and began his career on July 15th, 1985. He was promoted to Fire Lieutenant in 1993, and to Fire Captain on December 12th, 1996. He also served briefly as a Fire Inspector. As a Captain, Bill spent most of his time at Fire Station 3, on the busy west side of Decatur. Engine 3 was repeatedly one of the busiest companies on the Department. Bill took great pride in his fire fighting ability and experience, and rightfully so. Captain Horve and his crew recently received an award as "The EMS Company Of The Year" for a rescue when he and Lt. Adam Adam Ruderman pulled a woman from a burning house in late 2008. Bill was also a member of the Illinois Association of Fire Fighters Honor Guard and served Honor Guard duty on numerous occassions. His death is a devastating loss to Local 505 and the Decatur Fire Department, and he will be dearly missed.

Incident Summary from Chief Sekosky (dated 4/30)- DFD Captain Bill Horve, was gravely injured Monday afternoon while working on his personal vehicle. Below is a brief summary of the events leading up to this evening. Captain Horve was found pinned under his vehicle and unresponsive by a passing motorist who called 911. DFD administration recognized the incident address when it was dispatched and called an off duty fire captain, Captain Horve’ neighbor, to check on his status. The off duty fire captain immediately initiated rescue operations while DFD and DAS units responded. Once on scene, rescue operation continued (load and go) and Captain Horve was rushed to DMH. He was stabilized in the emergency department and placed into the intensive care unit on a ventilator. Several off duty firefighters, their wives and retired firefighters arrived at the hospital as word spread. A round the clock vigil was established in support for Captain Horve and his family by members of DFD. By mid afternoon today the treating physicians determined Captain Horve was not going to recover from his injuries. At that point, Captain Horve ‘s family decided to donate his organs so that others could live. Please keep Captain Bill Horve, his family and members of DFD in your prayers. Thanks. - Matthew Sekosky, Fire Chief Decatur Fire Department
